Dyslexia Teacher

Hi, I’m Steph and I am a qualified Primary teacher with over ten years teaching experience in Primary education. I am also a qualified Level 5 British Dyslexia Association teacher and have tutored dyslexic children

online and in-person for the past year. I have taught children from Year 3 to Year 7 and hope to develop my experience in lower secondary in the future. Joining Forest 1 st Tutoring has given me the opportunity to work

with children that need personalised support, as part of a warm and supportive team.

After leaving full time teaching to raise my family, I decided to specialise in dyslexia due to my own personal journey alongside immediate family members that are dyslexic. I wanted to learn more about the impact of dyslexia and the strategies that can be utilised to support young learners. This learning journey has helped me to recognise the difficulties that may be encountered by young learners and the importance of developing self-esteem. It is an area that I am passionate about, as well as helping learners to recognise the strengths that they have which they can apply to learning, in and outside the classroom.

The support I provide is highly individualised - targeting gaps in learning through a cumulative, multi-sensory approach to develop and strengthen key skills. I work at a pace that suits the learner, revisiting learning, linking learning and moving forwards according to the learner’s needs to building learner confidence.

Outside of teaching, I enjoy creative writing and currently have a third draft of a children’s fantasy novel in the bottom of my draw, waiting to be worked on! I have always enjoyed the fantastic ideas of books and the potential of language to create, bringing this passion to my teaching career and now to my dyslexia tuition, through the inclusion of quality texts, wordplay and the use of ideas that spark curiosity.

I have an MA in writing for children and hope to inspire children to find joy in literacy, even when faced with difficulties. Beyond literature, I live in the New Forest and love walking my dog, family cycles, paddle boarding, enjoying nature and the outdoors.
