Growth Season: Why effort matters more than ever in the 11+

April is often when the 11+ starts to feel very real for children and parents. But, before we focus on results, it’s important to recognise something far more valuable – effort. At this stage in the journey, it can be easy to become focused on scores, mock test results and comparisons. However, every year we see that the children who come to lessons each week, who keep going even when it feels difficult and who are willing to try again after getting things wrong, are developing something far more important than test technique: they are building resilience, they are learning how to manage challenge and they are discovering that progress takes time.

Much like Spring, growth is not always immediately visible. Beneath the surface roots are forming, confidence is building and understanding is deepening – even if it doesn’t always present itself in a test score. Every child develops at their own pace. Some will peak early, while others will make big leaps later on. This is normal learning behaviour.

What matters most is that your child feels supported, encouraged and recognised for their effort. When children feel safe to try, to make mistakes and to keep going, they are far more likely to succeed – not just in the 11+, but far beyond it.

We are incredibly proud of all the children who continue to work so hard, show determination and give their best. That effort and commitment is something to be celebrated.
