Helping Children Keep Their Confidence and Progress Over the Holidays!

The summer holidays are a wonderful opportunity for children to rest, recharge and enjoy a well-earned break from the routine of school. After a busy academic year, children need time to relax, spend time with family, play outside, be creative and simply enjoy being children.

However, the long summer break can also bring a challenge that many parents recognise: children can lose momentum with their learning. Skills that felt secure in July can feel rusty by September, and for some pupils, confidence can dip when they return to school after several weeks away from structured learning.

This is often referred to as “summer learning loss.” It describes the way children can forget or become less fluent in key academic skills over the holidays, particularly in areas such as reading, spelling, writing and maths. This does not mean that children need to spend the whole summer studying, but it does show the value of regular, purposeful practice.

A small amount of high-quality learning during the holidays can make a real difference. It helps children keep their brains active, maintain good habits and return to school feeling more confident and prepared.

At Forest 1st Tutoring, we believe summer learning should be calm, positive and carefully balanced. The aim is not to overload children or take away their holiday. The aim is to help them keep moving forward, revisit important skills and feel ready for the next stage of their education.

This summer, we are delighted to be offering a variety of learning opportunities for children across a wide range of ages and stages. These will include 11+ online classes, 11+ face-to-face classes, and Maths and English sessions for children going into Year 3, Year 4 and beyond, all the way up to GCSE.

Our 11+ classes will go live this week, with further summer classes for other year groups being added after half-term.

These sessions are ideal for children who would benefit from keeping up momentum over the holidays. Some pupils may need help consolidating key skills. Others may want to build confidence, prepare for entrance exams, strengthen their Maths and English, or get ready for an important school year ahead.

We are very fortunate to have a growing team of incredibly talented teachers working with us at Forest 1st Tutoring. They are experienced practitioners who understand how to support children in a calm, safe and happy learning environment. Their knowledge, encouragement and care allow pupils to make progress while still feeling supported and understood.

Our summer programme has been designed to offer flexibility for families and meaningful support for children. Whether your child is preparing for the 11+, moving into Key Stage 2, starting a new school year, or approaching GCSEs next year, there will be opportunities to access focused teaching from experienced tutors.

The summer holidays should absolutely be a time for fun, rest and family life. But with the right support, they can also be a time for growth. Even a few carefully chosen sessions can help children return to school feeling more secure, more confident and more ready to learn.

11+ classes will be available to book this week, with additional classes for other year groups going live after half-term. Current Forest First Tutoring parents can book through our online system on TutorCruncher.

If there are students in the community who would like to join our summer classes in Landford and Nomansland, please contact Joelle at
